Citric acid is the quiet catalyst behind every bath fizzy. Derived from the natural acids found in citrus fruits and now commonly produced through the fermentation of plant sugars, it brings both history and function into the formulation. When it meets baking soda in water, it creates the gentle effervescence that defines a bath bomb, releasing minerals, oils, and botanicals into the bath.

Beyond this reaction, citric acid has long been used in food and preservation for its ability to balance and stabilize. Your favorite soda likely contains it, and it is also a key ingredient in Homemade Herbal Tonic Water.

In the bath, it brings everything together, activating the blend in a way that feels like a quiet kind of kitchen science.

Botanical Spring Bath Bomb Recipe

Ingredients

1 cup baking soda

½ cup citric acid

½ cup Epsom salts

2 Tablespoons finely chopped cocoa butter

30–40 drops essential oil (see suggestions below)

4 oz witch hazel (in a spray bottle)

Optional Additions (choose your spring ingredients):

1–2 Tablespoons dried herbs or flowers
(lavender, rose petals, chamomile, calendula, butterfly pea flower)

1 Tablespoon clay
 (Kaolin, Rhassoul or Green)

1–2 teaspoons mica  (see suggestions below)

1 Tablespoon powdered milk or coconut milk (for a soft, skin-loving soak)

1 teaspoon orange peel or lemon peel

Directions

Step 1

In a large bowl, whisk together baking soda, citric acid, Epsom salts, cocoa butter, and any additional spring ingredients.

Step 2

Add essential oils and mix well to evenly distribute scent.

Step 3

Lightly spray witch hazel over the mixture while gently tossing and mixing with your hands.

Step 4

Continue spraying and mixing until the texture resembles damp sand—just moist enough to hold together when pressed.

Be careful not to over-wet, or the mixture will begin to fizz prematurely.

Step 5

Firmly pack into molds (a muffin tin, soap mold or silicone candy mold works beautifully).

Step 6

Let set for 15–20 minutes, then gently remove from molds.

Step 7

Allow to dry completely on a plate or tray for 24 hours.

Step 8

Store in an airtight container until ready to use or gift.
